Hope as an Anchor
“This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.”
Hebrews 6:19 NLT
God’s been speaking to me on hope recently and I want to continue to share these thoughts with you as well. I believe hope, on the surface, is an easily understood idea, but once you dig down and once you try to practice it, you realize that hope is a very difficult thing to live out. So many things in our lives fight to take over the place where hope is. Doubts, worries, sometimes even facts try to speak over our lives where hope should be.
I love this verse above because the imagery invites us into a metaphor of hope. The verse says that this hope, God’s hope, is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. In the storms of life, our souls begin to sway, shifting from one side to another based on how we feel or what we’re choosing to believe. But that’s where hope comes in, it is an anchor that holds us down, keeps us from shifting from our right mindsets about God. Holding onto hope in our present lives allows us not to be swayed into mindsets of believing the future will be dark and that the direction of our lives is leading nowhere good. No, as we hold onto a hope, we are not swayed on where we are at so we can have a clear vision of where we are going. If a ship is floating and drifting anywhere in the water, how will it be able to chart a course of where it wants to go? The same can be said for our thinking and beliefs.
So let’s hold onto hope, let’s plant that anchor down where we are right now and choose to believe that our God has great things ahead of us. Let’s not allow the worries of the world or any unbelief sway us away from the right perspective of where we are going. Because God has a good place He is taking us—let’s stay on course for that.
