The Gift of Peace
Today on Christmas, as we open up gifts from loved ones and family, I think on how gift giving on Christmas is a reflection of the many gifts the come from our God. Scriptures talk about many wonderful gifts God gives us, spiritual gifts, heavenly rewards, to name a few. But one gift in particular stands out to me today: the gift of peace.
The Christmas story is filled with this announcement of peace and it has always stood out to me:
“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” – Isaiah 9:6
“Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” – Luke 2:14
Jesus is the Prince of Peace and the angels announce that there is now peace on earth because Jesus was born. The one who reigns over peace has come into the world. It is truly a transformational revelation.
Even Jesus says it himself to his disciples: “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” – John 14:7
Peace is translated from the Hebrew word Shalom which means a total wholeness & completeness. The peace that Jesus gives us brings complete peace of mind and soul. Shalom comes from the complete embodiment of Jesus’s wholeness that is available to us. It means that every part of ourselves and life that sits in lack can experience peace.
Peace is something given to us through Jesus’ abiding presence in our hearts. The Lord spoke to me recently. He said, “abide back in me with the troubles of this world will not remain. I remain, to the end of the age.” We must focus back to the fact that Jesus reigns and he is enthroned above all else. Abiding in Him means abiding in peace.
All of us of are able to access this gift of peace. During this Christmas, I encourage you to open up the gift of peace Jesus has given you.
Merry Christmas to you and may God shower you with comfort, love, joy and peace today!
